Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. : Puppy Raiser : Becoming a Puppy Raiser

Becoming a Puppy Raiser

The foundation of this program is built on the love and trust provided by Southeatern's Puppy Raiser families. Becoming a Puppy Raiser requires patience, time and commitment. You will be responsible for the care and safety of the puppy. You must provide a loving home environment, teach appropriate house manners, instill confidence in the puppy, commit to exposure and socialization outings, apply basic obedience skills each day, be able to provide the required food and equipment and attend your Puppy Raiser monthly meetings.

Have you decided to raise? The next step is to apply. You must be 18 years of age or older or have an adult apply for you. Below you will find a secure on-line application or a PDF format that you can print out and mail to Southeastern. Once we receive your application we will forward it to the volunteer Area Coordinator closest to you. Within a short period of time, the Area Coordinator will be in touch to invite you to group meetings so you can see first-hand what raising is all about. Then an in-home visit will be conducted. Once this is completed the Area Coordinator will submit their paperwork to us and, upon approval, you will be placed on our waiting list for a puppy. The timing for a puppy can vary; you could typically expect a six-month wait or longer.

Currently we have raiser groups in several locations throughout Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. If you need further information prior to submitting an application, please contact us.
