Breeder Hosts

Dogs that have been selected into Southeastern’s breeding colony are all placed with volunteer host families. While Southeastern maintains ownership of its breeding stock dogs, the host family provides a safe and loving home. All medical expenses are paid by Southeastern. The host family covers the costs of food, grooming, flea and tick care, toys, leashes, collars and other equipment. Once the dog retires from its role as a breeder, the host family is given the option to adopt.

Host families must reside within a two-hour radius of our facilities, be available to transport the dog to Southeastern when requested and be available to take the dog to a veterinarian assigned by Southeastern.

Female breeders generally have a heat cycle every six months and are required to be housed at Southeastern during this time. The breeder will remain in our kennels with other female breeders for approximately three weeks. Southeastern breeds our female dogs every other heat cycle, with the hopes of producing a litter each year. The female breeders will whelp their first litter at Southeastern’s kennels and future litters will be whelped either at Southeastern or as determined by our breeding department. A whelping keeps the female breeder away from her home for an average of six weeks. Visiting hours are held for the host family.

The male breeder dog’s host family may be asked to deliver the dog to Southeastern’s Palmetto campus several times a year. We try to give three to five days notice, but it may be as little as 24 hours. The male breeder dogs are housed in our kennels during their scheduled breeding dates, which usually total a week at a time.
