Paws for Independence
Southeastern Guide Dogs was established in 1982 for the purpose of providing professionally trained guide dogs to the blind. Today our mission has expanded to assist not only the blind, but individuals seeking a service, therapy or law enforcement dog. Our administration facility, dormitories and kennels are in Palmetto, Florida. A training center in downtown Bradenton provides the opportunity for students and trainers to work with our guide dogs in a metropolitan setting.Selective breeding is the first step toward success with our dogs. We breed primarily Labrador retrievers, as well as golden retrievers, Australian shepherds, rough and smooth coat collies, and Hungarian vizslas. At two months, the puppies are placed in the homes of volunteer puppy raisers, where they receive love and guidance for a little over a year before returning for training at Southeastern.
All Southeastern guide dog candidates must pass an extensive medical checkup, be friendly, and show a willingness to learn and accept responsibility. Over 40 commands are taught during four to six months of training. Learning intelligent disobedience, the refusal to obey any command that would put the blind master and dog in danger, is essential for the making of a guide dog. If the guide candidate does not meet all the necessary requirements the dog is evaluated for service work in an alternative career.
Blind or visually impaired individuals who desire independent travel may apply for a guide dog, equipment and instruction, all free of charge. Students spend 26 days at Southeastern’s training center, learning how to work with and care for their dog. A bond of love, trust and devotion forms between the blind master and the dog as they become a team.
