Adopt a Gifted Canine®

gifted canineDogs that do not meet the specific criteria for guide dog work are placed in the Gifted Canines program. Whether brightening the day for the elderly or ill as therapy dogs or offering service in critical situations, our Gifted Canines make a real difference. The Gifted Canines program provides alternate career paths for these dogs in one of the following four subsidiary programs:

Therapy Dog Program- Whether it's the calming presence of a well-trained dog, or the healing power of unconditional love and companionship, Southeastern Therapy Dog handlers play an important role in enriching the lives of those within their community while educating the public about Southeastern Guide Dogs' important work. K-9 Law Enforcement Program- Are you part of a law enforcement agency and interested in adopting and training one of our dogs for a specialized career such as narcotic or arson detection or search and rescue? Please contact Rita Princivalli at 941.729.5665 or rita.princivalli@guidedogs.org for more information about this program.

Companion Dog Program- Companion Dogs offered by Southeastern Guide Dogs are available to individuals and families who demonstrate a need for the kind of therapy that a loving and patient canine companion can bring. While these companions are not considered services animals and do not have access rights under the ADA, they do serve as loyal friends to individuals with developmental disabilities such as Down's Syndrome or Autism, hearing impairments, and anxiety disorders. If you feel that a Companion Dog will offer you or your family benefit, our staff will be happy to identify a dog that meets your needs.
