Eric Brigham and service dog Pudge
Lithia Springs, Georgia
Eric Brigham spent eight years in the Navy as a ship’s serviceman in the supply department, traveling to Israel, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Bosnia, the African coast, Bahamas, and Cuba. When his contract was up, his quest for adventure led him to a 12-year Army career as a combat engineer. He served in Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Kuwait, conducting combat operations and tackling rough terrain.
Back home in Lithia Springs, Georgia, Eric left the Army behind but brought back the memories. He became more reclusive, staying mostly at home and avoiding going out in public. Now he’s hopeful that a watchful, laid-back black Labrador named Pudge will “watch my six” as he ventures out to everyday places such as the mall and restaurants with his wife.
“It will be good to have a service dog, to help my emotional status and be loving and caring,” he says. “He’ll be like a pal, and check in to things. He’s already picking up on my vibe, and he’ll help me exercise and get my energy level up.” Eric noticed that Pudge likes to touch, laying his head on Eric’s leg or foot, or putting his paw on Eric’s hand. “I know it’s going to be a great experience for me,” he says. “He and I get along great, and he’ll be my riding buddy.”
