Lessons from my Service Dog, Blue
After four years together with Blue, I still marvel at our relationship. It is too trite to say we are simply companions; it is much more profound. There is a depth to his gaze that is hard to fathom. He is not merely looking at me but radiates a sense of calm. And in that peace, I have been able to glimpse things that are greater than me. Blue has allowed me to see the beauty in the ordinary, through his eyes.
In these moments, he has taught me to understand humility. Not the solitude of my isolated comfort, but an understanding of allowing myself to appreciate the beauty and astonishment of my reality. Blue has allowed me to wash away the fear and pain from PTSD.
On our journey together, as we walk down this pathway of life, I have found a guide. Without reflection or deliberation, Blue seems to always follow the path that leads into the light. We stop and take in the moments of beauty, kindness, and love surrounding us. Blue has shown me my journey is not ending; it is beginning.
Southeastern Guide Dogs Helps Veterans Like Me
At Southeastern Guide Dogs, I was struck by their commitment to my class and all the veterans I encountered, from training on campus to all the support since Blue came home with me. It was apparent this school had one focus—the veteran. In the four years I have been associated with the school, that has been its guiding principle. It is a real and tangible anchor for people who struggle with PTSD.
My story is not unique. I invite you to explore other veterans’ stories in the recent edition of Life Unleased to learn more about how Southeastern Guide Dogs assists other veterans in need. For me, PTSD was a journey into darkness, and I’m not sure where I would be without Southeastern Guide Dogs and the 90 pounds of love quietly snoring next to me. He changed everything for me and gave me my life back.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Southeastern Guide Dogs and its veterans’ programs, and by extension, me and Blue.
Sincerely,
COL Bob Macpherson, U.S. Marine Corps (ret)
P.S. Southeastern’s generosity to we veterans is dependent on contributions from supporters like you.
