Puppy Starter Program
Short-term volunteers can take home a puppy.
Get some short-term puppy love and make an important contribution to raising a Southeastern Guide Dogs puppy. Become a puppy starter!
Small commitment, big impact
If you would love to have a puppy for a short period of time but aren’t able to make the year-plus commitment to raising a Southeastern Guide Dogs puppy—and you live within 75 miles of our Palmetto, Florida campus—we have a plan for you. You can host a young puppy in your home for 3 – 6 weeks.
You’ll help our mission by starting a puppy on its journey to becoming a superhero. Puppy starters make it possible for all our young puppies to be placed in homes by the age of 8 – 9 weeks, an important socialization period.
You’ll introduce your puppy to living in a house, sleeping in a crate, and learning a few basic cues. We’ll provide all needed supplies, and we’ll show you how to introduce the crate and how to get started with housetraining. Our experts will also give you individual instruction in “puppy kindergarten” skills once per week, either on our campus or virtually online, for the 3 – 6 weeks that you have your puppy.
Is this program for you?
You might enjoy being a puppy starter if:
- You love the baby puppy stage.
- You have the time and patience that a very young puppy needs.
- You want to see what it’s like to start raising and training a puppy.
- You live with 75 miles of our Palmetto, Florida campus. And,
- You’d love to raise a Southeastern Guide Dogs puppy, but a year seems like too much of a commitment.
Fill out the application and mention that you’re interested in becoming a puppy starter. We’ll be in touch to discuss next steps!
