Teaching a Puppy its Name
Establishing Attention and Communication with your Puppy
A puppy’s name serves as a vital tool for getting their attention and initiating communication. When you use your puppy’s name, it acts as an alert, letting them know that you are addressing them specifically. You want the pup to associate their name with good attention. This is particularly helpful in situations where you want to ensure you have their undivided attention before giving a cue or instruction.
At Southeastern Guide Dogs, it takes a loving and dedicated village to raise and train a puppy that will someday become a guide or service dog for someone who really needs them. That’s why we rely on our volunteer puppy raisers. These compassionate volunteers take our puppies into their hearts and homes and help them reach their potential before they go on to fulfill big destinies.
Training a puppy requires patience, consistency, and a clear understanding of the most basic cues. To help our puppy raisers succeed, we create special training videos like the one we’re sharing here. The techniques shown can apply to you and your precious pup, too!
Note: You might hear them called “commands” in the video. But “cues” is a much better description of how our puppies learn. A cue is a signal to perform a desired action, and it demonstrates that our smart dogs use their intelligent judgment to make choices and decisions to benefit their handlers.
In this article, we will explore the significance of teaching your puppy its name through ways that are sure to grab their little attention.
It’s important to associate your puppy’s name with positive experiences right from the start. Avoid using their name in conjunction with negative commands or displaying anger towards them. It is crucial to create positive associations with their name once they arrive in your home. By doing so, your puppy will develop a positive emotional response to their name, making training and communication more effective.
Teaching Your Puppy Their Name
Teaching your puppy their name is one of the first and most important training exercises. Once your puppy has a basic understanding of the marker word “yes,” you can begin practicing name recognition. In the initial weeks after bringing your puppy home, call their name and observe if they turn their head towards you. When they do, mark the behavior with a “yes” and encourage them with praise to approach you for a treat. Repeat this exercise when your puppy directs their attention away from you.
To reinforce name recognition in different environments, you can also practice the exercise in a group setting. Take turns with family members or friends calling your puppy’s name. This will help your puppy learn to respond to their name, even when distractions are present. Consistency is key during this process, so ensure everyone involved uses the same positive approach and rewards your puppy appropriately for responding to their name.
Selecting a positive and attention-getting name for your puppy is an essential step towards effective communication and training. By associating their name with positive experiences and consistently reinforcing name recognition, you can lay the groundwork for a strong bond and successful training journey. Remember to be patient and use positive reinforcement methods throughout the process. With time and consistency, your puppy will respond to their name with enthusiasm, and become a well-behaved and attentive companion for years to come.
